Abstract
During the past twenty years, hypnosis has become a popular tool in the criminal justice field. Criminal investigators use hypnosis to refresh the memories of victims and witnesses to help identify suspects and gather evidence. Prosecutors and defense attorneys use hypnosis to refresh the memories of trial witnesses. Many of those hired to administer hypnosis for these purposes are psychologists, psychiatrists, and others drawn from the medical profession. The medical profession trains its members to use hypnosis for therapeutic rather than forensic purposes, however, and many members of the profession discourage its use in refreshing the recollection of trial witnesses.
