Abstract
As I bring this paper to a close, it should be clear that I have not presented anything resembling a public policy agenda for marriage, family life, or personal relationships in the United States today. Rather, I have tried to draw some principles and cautionary notes from international and historical family experience. If these observations and concerns make some small contribution to the continuing debate about the American family, I will judge my time in presenting them well spent.
