Abstract
Restorative justice is an inspiring vision of how we should deal with the consequences of crime. But alas, its hope to eliminate altogether the need to punish an offender for the wrong he has done asks more than human nature will allow. Punishment is the way we right wrongs. So long as offenders commit wrongs that we wish to right, punishment will continue to be a practical necessity. The most for which we can realistically hope is not the elimination of punishment, but its transformation: punishment turned into penance.
