Abstract
In 1996, the immigration law landscape underwent drastic change with the passage of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 ("AEDPA") and the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 ("IIRIRA"). This Comment addresses how these drastic changes in immigration law have affected ineffective assistance of counsel claims made on the basis of the counsel's failure to inform an alien defendant of the deportation consequences of pleading guilty to an aggravated felony.
