Abstract
In the six decades since the landmark decision in Frye v. United States, the application of polygraph techniques in criminal investigation, litigation, government screening programs and business has increased dramatically as has the scientific study of polygraph testing. Similarly, public attention on the use of polygraph techniques has risen. Recent examples include national news stories on former Labor Secretary Raymond Donovan, the defense and the FBI in the DeLorean case, the prosecution in the trial of Floyd Fay and the Reagan administration." At the same time, abuse of polygraph tests in law enforcement and commercial settings has led to an increasing number of judgments and settlements based on civil rights abuse and defamation.
