Abstract

On October 27, 1984, Farrell Stine and two friends, Bryce Wursten and Steven Tilley, left for a weekend deer hunting trip. They intended to spend the weekend at a mountain cabin owned by Steven Tilley's parents.1 The Tilley cabin was located in a private mountain subdivision in northern Utah and public access to the area was restricted. The venting pipes for the cabin's three propane wall heaters were improperly routed through the side walls of the cabin in violation of both the Uniform Mechanical Code and the county building code. Snow sliding off the roof of the cabin would periodically bend or break the venting pipes. The owners were aware of the problem and had made several unsuccessful attempts to repair the pipes.
