Abstract
As an appellate court judge living among friends and neighbors of the lay community-people who share my concerns for the quality of life our posterity will enjoy-I sense a growing perception of our criminal justice system as a baleful domain of fiddlers preoccupied with dissonance while citizens' houses are threatened by fire. In contemplating the metaphorical scene, it is easy to conjure up images of weary fire fighters looking askance at the detached, autotheistic fiddlers and pledging to rid the community oftheir presence.
