Abstract

I grew up the youngest of twelve children in a Chicano family living in the slums of Albuquerque, New Mexico. My father was an abusive alcoholic. My mother raised the kids by herself both before and after my older brothers kicked my father out of the house. I have memories of when I was a very little girl walking with my mother to the Salvation Army "store." I remember my mother buying things for the house: clothes, odds and ends. I would try to get her to buy me a doll or some other toy for what I know now were pennies but what I thought then to be a fortune.
