Abstract
Since 1993, post-conviction DNA testing has proven itself to be a valuable systemic safeguard against punishing the innocent. Post-conviction DNA testing has now exonerated at least one hundred and forty-three Americans. At least twelve of these exonerated citizens were at one time on death row. Virtually all had exhausted their appeals and post-conviction remedies. Only their serendipitous rescue by DNA testing saved them from execution. Collectively, these one hundred and forty-three innocent Americans served more than 1397 years in prison.
